Metabolic regulation of γδ intraepithelial lymphocytes

Abstract Elucidating the relationship between cellular metabolism and T cell function has substantially advanced our understanding of how cells are regulated in response to activation. The metabolic profiles circulating or peripheral have been well-described, yet less is known regarding complex local microenvironments shape modulate bioenergetic profile tissue-resident lymphocytes. Intraepithelial lymphocytes expressing γδ receptor (γδ IEL) provide immunosurveillance intestinal epithelium limit tissue injury microbial invasion; however, their activation effector responses occur independently antigen recognition. In this review, we will summarize current knowledge IEL informs metabolism. We also discuss role gut microbiota shaping these sentinel lymphocytes, turn, bioenergetics contribute regulation surveillance behavior function. Improved processes involved homeostasis may yield novel strategies amplify protective functions context health disease.
